Gerry Lopez Lightning Bolt shaped at Bennett factory Brookvale, very early 70’s. Once in a life time, a unique board like this comes along. Extremely rare board and an amazing piece to add to your collection. Your opportunity to grab an incredible and beautiful piece of surfing history, knowing you have a truly collectable piece to add to, or start, your collection. Along the stringer, penciled into the foam it has “3318 LOPEZ”.
We contacted both Gerry Lopez and Randy Rarick direct as we wanted to verify it’s history. Gerry confirmed that “this board was made at the Barry Bennett factory in Brookvale in the 1970s”. As to whether or not Gerry personally shaped this board, Randy commented “This is going to be one of those, ‘you never know for sure’ deals. The Bolt logo that is on the bottom, is the one’s that Gerry made very early on and I have seen them on other boards made in Oz. I think Gerry must have taken them down with him and when he’d either shape or have someone make them for them, he gave them that logo. Bennett did indeed use this logo, so I know they made them with it on. The ‘Lopez’ on the foam does not look like Gerry’s writing, but as I said, Gerry didn’t recognize the board, and it’s been so long, he can’t remember all those that ‘ghost’ shaped them. You can’t be sure, but it does have the signature on the foam, it is for sure a ‘designed by’ board and could have in deed been shaped by Gerry“.
What is truly unique about this board is that the Lightning Bolt logo is a very early one that was most likely bought over by Gerry, as the later Lightning Bolt logos that Bennet used had the words “by Bennett Surfboards” on them. So this is definitely one of the early ones.
The usual heel marks on the deck and some old school repairs, the bottom has slight bump depressions, stress marks, base of fin surface cracks, old school repairs and rail shatters (see photos). No twist or Delam. 6ft11″ x 19″ x 3″
