Sharkbanz Technology has been verified by an independent third-party analysis group at the prestigious School of Coastal Environment Department of Marine Science at Coastal Carolina University (USA). Furthermore, the shark deterrent technology was proven effective at reducing shark depredation in recreational fishing by the WA Government (DPIRD) in a year-long 2021 study.
HOW IT WORKS:
Sharkbanz’s patented magnetic technology is the result of long-term scientific research and testing. Sharkbanz utilize powerful permanent magnets to create an effective shark deterrent that’s always on and require no batteries or charging. When sharks approach Sharkbanz, they detect the device’s strong electromagnetic field, which provides a sudden sensation that is thousands of times stronger than the signal produced by anything in a shark’s normal food chain. Consequently, sharks are deterred away from Sharkbanz. This cause and effect is analogous to having a bright light suddenly shined in your eyes in a dark room. You would not be hurt, but you would want to turn away. Sharks have the strongest electroreception (sensitivity to electrical fields) in the animal kingdom. They use this unique capability to navigate at night, when in murky water, and to hunt. Their electroreceptors (Ampullae of Lorenzini) and lateral line canals connect to the seawater by pores on their snouts and other zones of the head. When a fish swims, or even moves its gills, it creates a change in the surrounding geomagnetic field that sharks can detect with these electrically sensitive, gel-filled canals. Since the shark is tuned to be looking for very weak electromagnetic signals from its prey (heartbeats, muscle movements), this organ is highly sensitive. When encountered in the wild, the Sharkbanz field is exponentially greater than anything the animal will have experienced before and highly unpleasant. This tells the shark it is definitely not food.
ANKLE OR WRIST?
Sharkbanz are designed to be worn on either your ankle or your wrist. We advise you size your Sharkbanz to your ankle, since its circumference is generally larger than that of your wrist. This way you can wear it on either one. If you are wearing just one Sharkbanz, we recommend wearing it on your ankle as the majority of shark bites occur on the ankle and leg areas.
ONE OR MULTIPLE SHARKBANZ?
Similar to other safety devices, the greater the coverage, the greater the protection. One Sharkbanz will help you reduce the risk, but the electromagnetic field generated by one Sharkbanz does not act as a full-body force field. If you are in particularly shark populated areas (such as Florida, California, Hawaii, North Carolina, Australia and other areas of the Pacific) and spending a lot of time in the ocean, then we recommend wearing multiple Sharkbanz – and suggest one on your wrist and one on your ankle. It’s one of the reasons we made them so affordable.
GREAT WHITE SHARK SAFETY:
Sharkbanz patented magnetic technology has been successfully tested on a wide variety of predatory shark species (Bull Shark, Blacktip, etc.) including Great Whites, who rely heavily on their electroreception when hunting and navigating. However, Great Whites are also an ambush predator species and are known to attack from far distances at high speeds (when hunting). Sharkbanz can reduce the risk of an investigative Great White encounter, especially when wearing multiple units to increase the deterrent field range, but Sharkbanz can not eliminate the threat. Nothing can.
DON’T BE A DUMMY:
Yes, they have successfully tested this product in the water with live, wild sharks, and they always do so in conjunction with their scientific partners at Shark Defense Technologies who are accredited marine biologists. They practice under the guidelines of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees. For your safety and the well-being of our animal populations, you should not “test” Sharkbanz products on your own. Just as you shouldn’t tease a dog, don’t entice or provoke sharks, and we do not endorse intentionally swimming with sharks (or hand-feeding them) while using Sharkbanz. Do not bait sharks while using Sharkbanz, and understand the limitations of the product while doing ocean activities such as spearfishing. Sharkbanz are intended to help you, but you still need to be smart.
